I am a Skate Marshal

Today I officially passed my marshal training for the LFNS. A group which runs weekly organised street skates in London.

Before I stepped up I had some reservations so I thought I'd share with everyone and debunk what a lot of potential marshals are also thinking.

  • I have to be fast. Speed does help but it's not the number one priority. Good control and the ability to handle yourself within traffic is a priority over speed.
  • I don't have the stamina. You don't have to be sprinting the whole time. At junctions you will be stationary while you wait for the skate pack to catch up and pass.
  • I don't think I can handle difficult drivers. Most drivers are accommodating, especially when they see the whole pack of skaters coming through. You also have the support of all your fellow marshals to help diffuse any potential situations. (Your sexy hi-viz vest helps assert your authority!).
  • It looks dangerous. Well if you go diving head first into traffic then yes, but that's not what we do. You only step out into junctions when the traffic flow is in your favour.

Common sense is the only other thing you really need.

When you put your name forward you don't immediately become a marshal. You'll be shadowing another marshal for a few sessions and there's no urgency in passing within a time frame.

The LFNS needs YOU.
