I've never been bothered about receiving participation medals as it's not special when a thousand other people have the same mass produced souvenir. From a cynical point of view it's a waste of resources. Some events give you tshirts but at least it's practical, yet there are only so many technical shirts I can wear. Plus the 'free,' tshirt is really advertising for the organisers as you rock up in the gym with your Brownie badge. However as the year comes to a close these mementos are actually a nice way to reflect on my achievements. Furthermore the real sentimentality of these medals are the memories you associate with them and the people you were with at the time. So for those reason I will continue to keep hold of my silverware... May 2015 bring more shiny happiness...
